WHO WE ARE
Eastern infectious diseases and travel medicine (EIDTM) was established by Professor Joseph Torresi and Dr Ivan Stratov to initially provide an infectious diseases service to Knox private hospital and the eastern Melbourne suburbs . Over the years, EIDTM has gradually expanded across multiple other locations , providing inpatient services across other major private hospitals in the eastern and south eastern regions of Melbourne. The team currently runs a busy outpatient practice from Mitcham consulting suites.

- Post travel management (including Dengue fever, Malaria, Typhoid fever)
- Travel vaccinations (including Yellow fever vaccination)
VIRAL HEPATITIS & HIV
- Treatment and monitoring of patients with hepatitis B and C
(including pregnant patients)
- Management of patients with HIV
- Pre exposure and post exposure prophylaxis to HIV
- Non tuberculosis mycobacterial infections (including mycobacterium avium complex, mycobacterial ulcerans)
INFECTIONS IN IMMUNOCOMPROMISED HOSTS
- Opportunistic infections in patients with solid and haematological malignancies or transplantation
- Pre immunosuppression vaccine and prophylaxis advice
Professor Joseph Torresi
MBBS, BmedSci, FRACP, PhD
Professor Joe Torresi is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner Fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and a Professor of Medicine, University of Melbourne. He is an infectious diseases physician at the Austin hospital, Knox Private Hospital, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, has a PhD in Microbiology and is co-director of the Australian GeoSentinel Surveillance network site. Joe heads a hepatitis virology laboratory at the Doherty Institute, which is focused on vaccine and immunology research for hepatitis C and hepatitis B and C pathogenesis.
Joe currently sees inpatient consults at Knox private hospital and the Epworth Eastern.
Dr Ivan Stratov
MBBS, FRACP, PhD
Dr Ivan Stratov is a founding member of EIDTM who completed his Medical Degree at University of Melbourne in 1989. He then went on to complete a medical mission in 1997 in the Caucasus region and subsequent specialty training in Infectious Diseases in 2001. In 2005 he completed a PhD, focusing on HIV vaccine research and has over 40 scientific and medical publications. Ivan and long standing passion for the provision of medical care to the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, as evidence by more than 15 years of experience running a private medical practice in the region.
Ivan currently sees inpatient consults at Knox private hospital, Ringwood private hospital and Mitcham private hospital. He also sees outpatients through the Mitcham Road Consulting Suites.
Dr Sarah Garner
MBBS, BmedSci(hons), FRCPA, FRACP
Dr Sarah Garner is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Medical Microbiologist, holding dual specialty fellowships as both a physician (FRACP) and pathologist (FRCPA). Sarah has also undertaken a Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours and started PhD studies at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in 2017 looking at the role of cell death pathways in eradicating the latent reservoir of
HIV infection. This work is ongoing. She works as an ID Physician in Melbourne in both the private and public sectors and also holds a position as a Medical Microbiologist at Dorevitch Pathology.
Sarah is passionate about integrated care for her patients and working with patients as partners to help manage their health issues. Sarah has also helped with development of guidelines of infectious diseases management for regional Victorian GPs and holds a Senior Lecturing position with Monash University Rural School teaching undergraduate medical students. In her spare time she enjoys dancing, meditation and yoga.
Sarah currently sees inpatient consults at Knox private hospital and will be starting inpatient consulting at Epworth Eastern and Mitcham Private this year. She sees outpatients through the Mitcham Road Consulting Suites.

Medicare rebate will cover about half the cost of an initial consultation. Discounted fees for Pensioners and Health Care Card holders are available.
A current referral from a specialist or general practitioner is necessary to make an appointment with the EIDTM team

All patients are advised to bring a current medication list and any relevant pathology and radiology along with them to the consultation.
